How to Measure Roof Pitch

From the Roof

Place a level horizontally on the roof. Measure 12 inches along the level, then measure the vertical distance from the end of the level down to the roof surface. That vertical distance is your rise.

From the Attic

Find a roof rafter in the attic. Hold a level horizontally against the bottom of the rafter. Measure 12 inches along the level, then measure the vertical distance up to the rafter. That's your rise per 12 inches of run.

With a Speed Square

Hold a speed square against the rafter with the pivot point at the bottom edge. Read the angle directly from the degree scale on the square. Enter that angle into our calculator.

What is roof pitch?
Roof pitch describes the slope or angle of a roof. It's expressed as a ratio of rise (vertical height) to run (horizontal distance), typically in the X:12 format. For example, a 6:12 pitch means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance.
What is a standard roof pitch?
There is no universal standard or ideal residential pitch. Moderate slopes such as 4:12 through 6:12 are familiar U.S. examples, but climate, architecture, structure, drainage details, the selected roof assembly, and locally adopted code all affect the design.
How do I measure roof pitch?
You can measure roof pitch three ways: (1) From the roof: place a level horizontally, measure 12 inches, then measure the vertical rise. (2) From the attic: measure along a rafter. (3) Using a speed square: hold it against the rafter and read the angle directly.
What roof pitch is walkable?
Pitch alone never makes a roof safe to walk. Surface material, moisture, debris, height, edge exposure, and worker protection all matter. Treat every roof as a fall hazard and use a qualified professional and a site-specific fall-protection plan instead of relying on a pitch cutoff.
What is the minimum roof pitch for shingles?
Check the exact shingle instructions and locally adopted code. IRC Section R905.2 permits asphalt shingles from 2:12 when its low-slope underlayment provisions are met; many ordinary installation details assume 4:12 or steeper. Asphalt shingles are not permitted below 2:12 under that section.
How do I turn roof measurements into a material list?
Measure the footprint and pitch first, calculate true roof area, then add eave, rake, ridge, hip, and valley lengths. The material takeoff uses those measurements to estimate field shingles, starter, ridge cap, underlayment, drip edge, ice-and-water membrane, and nails.
